Calendar REST API fails out of season if Omer count is turned on

Monica Cellio 3 years ago updated 3 years ago 4

We use the REST API to add the Hebrew date to our site.  We added this integration during the Omer and included o=on in the URL.  We're fetching data a month a time, so we've only now (June 1) encountered this failure: if the URL includes o=on "out of season", the API returns the wrong month's data.  We expected this directive to just be ignored outside of the Omer.

Specifically, this URL returns data for May, not June:

https://www.hebcal.com/hebcal?v=1&cfg=json&year=now&month=now&d=on&o=on

Dropping "&o=on" causes the current month's data to be returned.

Would it be possible for the API to ignore the Omer directive when not relevant?  We'd like to be able to embed one durable URL, without having to remember to edit it at the beginning and end of the Omer each year.

Hi, thanks for using Hebcal, and thanks for your question!

If you'd like multiple things to show up on a printed calendar (such as Jewish holidays and also local national holidays ), we recommend downloading/exporting from hebcal.com and importing into a more full-featured desktop or web calendar program, such as Google Calendar, Outlook, or Apple Calendar.

If you're a software developer, you'll find many of our APIs described here.

In particular, if you are trying to display a Jewish calendar on your website, we recommend using fullcalendar.io

Hebcal Integrated into outlook calendar

Erin 3 years ago updated by Michael J. Radwin 3 years ago 1

I am having a problem with a Hebcal that was downloaded to my outlook. It somehow became integrated into my outlook - which would normally be fine. However, it's in the wrong time zone and is displaying the incorrect time. The only way to fix is to manually go into each event and either delete or change the time zone. the problem is I have multiple years of events. Has anyone else encountered this issue?

Answer

Hi, thanks for using Hebcal. Sorry to hear about your difficulty with deleting multiple events.

When hebcal exports to CSV format, it puts the text "Hebcal" or “Jewish Holidays” in the Location or Description field. That is there to make it easy to remove entries from your calendar if you got the wrong settings. For example, if you were using candle-lighting times but entered the wrong zip code, you could follow these instructions to remove all of the incorrect entries:

  1. Open your Calendar and on the View menu point to Current Viewand click Events
  2. Click the Location column heading to sort the list of holidays by Location (you should see “Jewish Holidays” in the location field for the holidays that you imported from CSV)
  3. Click to select the first holiday you want to delete
  4. Hold down SHIFT and click the last holiday you want to delete
  5. Press DELETE to remove all the selected holidays from your Calendar

Here are similar instructions for Outlook desktop on Mac

Google and other calendar software providers already offer United States holidays.

Hebcal's mission is to increase awareness of Jewish holidays and to help Jews to be observant of the mitzvot.

Hi, thanks for using Hebcal and thanks for your feedback.

We recently redesigned the holidays year-on-a-page to be more mobile friendly and to better clarify that holidays start the evening before (except for minor fasts which begin at dawn).

    https://www.hebcal.com/holidays/2022

We hope you enjoy the new design!
