is there a way to store yahrzeit dates?

Yes and no. Yes, if you enter this year into the form you will get a perpetual calendar based on those dates. However, you may inadvertently create an inaccurate calendar!

The rules for calculating birthdays and yahrzeits are a bit complicated and depend on the actual attributes of the Hebrew year they occurred in (was it a leap year? Short Kislev? Long Cheshvan?). It's unlikely that this year matches the form of the year the birth or death occurred.

This is why we recommend you put in the actual date of the birth or death (e.g. original year) and not the current year.

Error in Maftir for Chol Hamoed Sukkot this year

NetDoc 3 years ago updated by Michael J. Radwin 3 years ago 1

Posted this on github as well:

You have a problem with using your own data on your website. For 2022-10-15 the "leyningmaftir" from your REST API is Numbers 29:26-29:31. This is the standard maftir for Chol Hamoed Sukkot, and is the same as Chabad's: https://www.chabad.org/parshah/default_cdo/aid/137613/jewish/Sukkot.htm

However, your website https://www.hebcal.com/holidays/sukkot-2022?i=on lists Numbers 29:29-34. Have no idea where this comes from other than it being the 4th aliyot of Hoshana Raba, the next day.

And, interestingly, your puzzling concatenation field, "leyningtorah" on that day shows: Exodus 33:12-34:26; Numbers 29:17-22, 29:20-25, 29:23-28, 29:26-31, 29:29-34 Which is not at all what is read. But the final 8 characters: "29:29-34" are the same as the odd "leyningmaftir."

The omer count on Alexa in Israel

Arthur Lampert 3 years ago updated by Michael J. Radwin 3 years ago 1

The omer count on Alexa is off (you get the old day's count) in Israel in the evening. It seems to straighten out by morning. Is there a workaround for this?

Hi, thanks for using Hebcal.

Results for year 1752 C.E. and earlier may be inaccurate.

Hebcal does not take into account a correction of ten days that was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII known as the Gregorian Reformation.[1]

Torah reading on Monday/Thursday the week prior to passover?

etayluz 3 years ago updated by Michael J. Radwin 3 years ago 5

I've noticed that there is no reading for Monday and Thursday of this week (the week before Pesach of year 5782).

Is this correct or is it possible that the reading is absent from fullkriyah-5782.csv ?

I have found mistakes in the csv files in the past that had to be corrected. I'm wondering if this omission of the Monday/Thursday Torah readings is intentional or not.

Answer

Yes, there are weekday readings this week. The algorithm for generating the readings did not handle the case where Shabbat is a holiday, so we have now fixed that issue.

The correct weekday Torah reading on a week such as this is the next regular parashat haShavua.

We've made changes to the weekday-diaspora-5782.csv file (and other files) to account for this change.

Sedra RSS feed does not reflect readings for special Shabbatot

Rabbi Michael Fessler 3 years ago updated by Michael J. Radwin 3 years ago 1

Hi - our synagogue website uses the RSS feed (http://www.hebcal.com/sedrot/index.xml)  to display the upcoming week's Torah readings. I've noticed that it does not include modified readings for special Shabbatot, e.g. the haftarah for Shabbat Hagadol is from Malachi, but the RSS feed is showing the standard Metzora haftarah from II Kings. It would be great to have this accurately reflect the reading, especially since you already display it correctly in other contexts. Thank you!

Haftarah: Malachi 3:4-24 | Shabbat HaGadol
