Add the 18 minutes for shabat to really start

Michel Feinstein 6 years ago updated by Michael J. Radwin 3 years ago 5

I downloaded the calendar for Google Calendar and now I only have the starting times for Shabat, there used to be an 18 minute entry in my calendar, where I could see when shabbat really starts. Please put it back.

Hi, thanks again for your feedback. After experimenting with an 18-minute event many years ago, and later a 1-minute event (2014), we changed the Candle lighting and Havdalah events to be 0-minute duration starting in September 2015 to be consistent with how other calendars represent an instant in time.

There should be included the times for starting and ending Fasts and other minor hollidays

Michel Feinstein 6 years ago updated by Michael J. Radwin 3 years ago 2

All the minor hollidays don't have the times where they start or end, specially fasts, it just appears on my Google Calendar as being the whole day.

Answer

Fast start and end times are now provided for major fast (Tish’a B’Av) and minor fasts (Ta’anit Esther, Tzom Gedaliah, Tzom Tammuz, Asara B’Tevet, & Ta’anit Bechorot). Minor fasts begin at alot hashachar (when the sun is 16.1° below the horizon in the morning) and end when 3 medium-sized stars are observable in the night sky (when the sun is 7.083° below the horizon in the evening). Tish’a B’Av fast begins at sundown and ends when 3 medium-sized stars are observable.

Hebcal and Alexa

How to adjust the minutes before before sunset on Alexa?

Answer
Michael J. Radwin 3 years ago

Hi, thanks for using Hebcal on Alexa!

We don't offer an option for setting minutes before sundown for Alexa candle-lighting times. Candle-lighting times on Alexa are fixed to 18 minutes before sunset in general, and 40 minutes before sunset in Jerusalem.

Yahrzeit calendar only works for current year

savannah_johnston 6 years ago updated by Michael J. Radwin 6 years ago 1

When I use the yahrzeit calendar, it ignores the year I input, and only calculates as though I input the current year. So if I enter 1994, 2011, or whatever other year, it doesn't matter, it only gives dates for 2019 and onward.

Hi, thanks for your message. The fact that you only see current year plus future is by design.

If you would like to convert historical dates, please use our date converter tool

Minor Jewish Holidays - Tu B'Av

Tamara 6 years ago updated by Michael J. Radwin 6 years ago 1

Minor Jewish Holidays - Tu B'Av Aug 16 F  (YOUR COMMENT) Jewish holiday of love, similar to Valentine's Day. On Valentines day during the plague in Europe Jews were dragged out of their homes and burned at the stake. I suggest you remove this description from Tu B'Av.

Hi, thanks for using Hebcal. And thanks for your message!

We have updated the description of Tu B'Av. The Wikipedia article still contains a reference to Valentine's day, but we don't control the content there.

Localisation

menachem sk 6 years ago updated by Michael J. Radwin 6 years ago 1

Hi, Thanks for the great service! We are developing a free mobile app meant to give the uninitiated Jews of Hungary and Slovakia access to Jewish resources, a Hebrew calendar being one of them. We wish to implement certain localisation features. Is this possibility available? Thanks in advance!
