Smart hone customizability based on shabat/Yom tov times

Avi Parshan 2 years ago updated by Michael J. Radwin 2 years ago 2

It would be really cool if I could have the start or end of a holiday or shabat trigger some automation...

such as, having smart plugs turn on or off, maybe shutting off the microphone on alexa, a ring or notification sound before or after the event (such as an 18 minute warning for the men).

alternatively,  if there is some hebcal app that can interface with IFTTT, zapper,  homeassistant , or tasker I could certainly use that as a base and build the rest up myself.

overall your site is super useful and these features might be hard to implement hut will be much appreciated!

Thanks for using Hebcal, and thanks the bug report. We were able to reproduce the error you noticed and have fixed the issue. Please try reloading the page and re-downloading the CSV calendar and the modern holidays should be properly excluded.

REST API - Yom Kippur Bug?

Yitz Shaffer 2 years ago updated 2 years ago 2

The Yom Kippur data seems to formatted differently than other Yomim Tovim.

Instead of separate entries for "category: holiday" and "category: havdalah", it all show under the same key:

Is this by design?

I'm using this URL to get the data:

http://www.hebcal.com/hebcal?v=1&cfg=json&c=on&maj=on&o=on&lg=h&s=on&geo=pos&i=off&latitude=33.87&longitude=-118.33

Hi, thanks for the bug report!

You are indeed correct, this is a bug caused by a recent change. We have identified the cause and have pushed out a fix.

Reminders not showing up

Alipoppins 2 years ago updated by Michael J. Radwin 2 years ago 1

I have an iPhone 13 and I had set up my Yahrzeit calendar and the reminders were all there.
i can no longer see the reminders.
move tried to delete the calendar.
I’ve unsubscribed and re subscribed.
I’ve tried to download and add the calendar with a subscription.
it doesn’t seem to matter what I do, I can’t get the reminders back on my calendar.
i have another one that shows up fine, I tried to duplicate all the settings, but nothing seems to add it back in.

How to retreive shabbat time only and not roch hachana information in the API for shabbat

How to retreive shabbat time only and not roch hachana information in the API for shabbat

Answer
Michael J. Radwin 2 years ago

The Shabbat API returns multiple events that occur during the coming week, including of course candle-lighting and Havdalah and the weekly Torah portion. It also may include events like Rosh Chodesh.

If you'd like to ignore Rosh Hashana or other holiday-related events, our general recommendation is for your application to filter the items array in the returned response, paying careful attention to items that meet your application's criteria. For example, you may be interested only in those items that have a category that matches candles, parashat, or havdalah.

shabbat API info by start= and end= in zmanim api not exist

Itzhak Duani 2 years ago updated 2 years ago 2

hello.
i want to fetch few shabbat times in advance with start= and end=, like in the weekly times.
but its not working.
i can only receive info for the next shabbat in calendar
i am missing something ?
or its just doesn't exist...?

Answer
Michael J. Radwin 2 years ago

Hi, thanks for your question.

This behavior is by design. The Shabbat API always displays the current week's information, including both Friday and Saturday, even if Friday has already passed. No, there is no way to change this behavior by specifying different start/end parameters.

If you want control over date ranges please instead use our Jewish calendar API and specify start and end parameters. The returned JSON is nearly identical to the Shabbat API so it should be easy to transition to this supported API.
