Shabbat Hanukkah maftir - only one prince

Josh Greenfield 4 years ago updated by Peggy Knox 2 years ago 3

The Hanukkah Torah reading for weekdays (per Ashkenazic custom outside of Israel) is two days of the princes bringing offerings from the section of Numbers 7 (e.g., on day 3 of Hanukkah we read of the prince who brought offerings on day 3), plus the prince who brought offerings on day 4).  On Shabbat of Hanukkah (when not also Rosh Hodesh) we read the regular Torah reading for 7 aliyot, and the maftir reading is just one prince, corresponding to that day of Hanukkah (e.g., if Shabbat is day 3 we read of the prince from day 3 only).  Hebcal.com right now is showing that the Shabbat of Hanukkah this year we read from Numbers 7:18-29, which is two princes:

I'm guessing the algorithm is just using the weekday Hanukkah custom to figure out what the Shabbat maftir reading should be, but that seems to be incorrect.  For the source of the Hanukkah reading, you can check Shulkhan Aruch OH 684:2 (note 6 in the Mishnah Berurah specifies only one prince in the maftir).

Yom Kippur Katan

nsuffin 4 years ago updated by Michael J. Radwin 3 years ago 2

With all of the different dates currently included in Hebcal, would it be possible to please also add Yom Kippur Katan?

Answer

Update: we've added a Yom Kippur Katan calendar feed to the Hebcal website. You can find it towards the bottom of the Jewish holiday downloads page.

Yom Kippur Katan

יוֹם כִּפּוּר קָטָן is a minor day of atonement occurring monthly on the day preceeding each Rosh Chodesh.
9 calendar events per year. 10-year perpetual feed.

Yom Kippur Katan is omitted in Elul (on the day before Rosh Hashanah), Tishrei (Yom Kippur has just passed), Kislev (due to Chanukah) or Nisan (fasting not permitted during Nisan). When Rosh Chodesh occurs on Shabbat or Sunday, Yom Kippur Katan is observed on the preceding Thursday. [1]

Complete set of candle lighting times for a chag

Rachel 5 years ago updated by Michael J. Radwin 3 years ago 1

I would greatly appreciate your sending a complete set of candle lighting and Havdalah times for a chag BEFORE the chag begins.

I looked up the times for the last 2 days of Pesach at another site during chol hamoed, so I could post them on my kitchen cabinet IN ADVANCE.

I was sent the times via HebCal AFTER the 7th day had already started (east coast USA) which was not helpful.

This type of issue has happened before, and is very frustrating and disappointing. I appreciate the HebCal email service, but it’s disturbing that the info is incomplete. It also leads me to wonder if the info is reliable, since this type of problem is easily preventable by better planning.

Hi, thanks for using Hebcal. We're sorry to hear that our weekly email updates didn't arrive in a timely fashion last year. We've made some changes recently to ensure that doesn't happen again.

We'd also like to encourage you to take a look at our Candle-lighting Times Year at a Glance tool. You can fill out a form to get Shabbat and holiday candle lighting times and Parashat haShavuah (weekly Torah Portion) for the entire year on a single page. You can print it out and post it on your refrigerator.

Have you considered/investigated adding to the skill that when you mute the Echo Show for Shabbat the Show will display cards with the localized zmanim for that day?

Hi, thanks for using Hebcal!

Follow these instructions to add a Hebcal Jewish holiday calendar 5-year feed to Outlook.com (also called outlook.live.com Calendar). This technique will also work with Windows 10 devices (desktops, laptops, tablets and phones) that have a built-in calendar application that connects to Outlook.com or MSN.

Chaykee 5 years ago updated by Michael J. Radwin 4 years ago 4

I really love that I can ask Alexa what time shabbos is but if your data set is based on zip codes only, I get times for California instead of ISRAEL! Please please update this skill to accommodate international use!!

Hi, thanks for using Hebcal

Calendars exported from Hebcal to Google Calendar or other services that support iCalendar subscription feeds are typically “perpetual”. That is, they contain events for the current year (Gregorian or Hebrew) plus some number of years into the future. Our calendars typically have 5 years of events (current year plus 4 years into the future).

Size limitations imposed by Google and other calendar clients require that we limit the number of events per feed. The total number of years is now reduced to 4 years if you check some options that include many events (“Candle lighting times”, “Days of the Omer” or “Show Hebrew date for dates with some event”) or 2 years if you check options that include one event every day of the year (“Daf Yomi” or “Show Hebrew date every day of the year”).

Note that if you’d like to include the Hebrew date for every day of the year, you can subscribe to that calendar via a separate calendar feed at our Jewish Holiday downloads page. Look for Hebrew calendar dates (English) or Hebrew calendar dates (Hebrew).

An added advantage of this approach is that you can choose separate colors in Google Calendar or iOS/iCloud calendar for the daily calendar event feed.

Is there a way to get a few years results and not only one year?

Zeev 5 years ago updated by Michael J. Radwin 3 years ago 1

Hi, will appritiate your help

when i use:

https://www.hebcal.com/hebcal/?v=1&i=on&year=5781&month=x&yt=H&lg=s&c=on&geo=geoname&geonameid=281184&b=40&m=42

i can put one year (like year 5781), is there a way to put a few years? something like from 5781 till 5800?

so i do not need to import to google calander a year by year, and can do it all at once.

No Shabbat Candle Times

suzydickstein 5 years ago updated by Michael J. Radwin 3 years ago 1

For some reason my Shabbat lighting times seemed to have vanished. Figured out it was the 2020 thing. Subscribed, but it still isn't showing. Any suggestions to get it to work?

Hi, thanks for using Hebcal!

If you subscribe to one of the Hebcal simple calendar feeds as your screenshot above shows, those are generic for the Diaspora and don't include any city-specific candle-lighting times.

To get candle-lighting times for macOS Calendar.app and include candle-lighting times for your city, follow these instructions
