Havdallah times on Google calendar are wrong - one week behind

Scott S. 4 years ago updated by Michael J. Radwin 4 years ago 5

I live in Simi Valley, CA, 93065, and I use the hebcal calendar through Google calendar. The havdallah times listed on Saturdays have been off by about 10 or 11 minutes each week when compared with Chabad.org 's zmanim times. Please advise.

Answer

If you'd like to customize Havdalah calculations in Google Calendar, our recommendation is to remove/unsubscribe the entire calendar, and then to download/subscribe from Hebcal again with the new settings.

Michael J. Radwin:

Once I remove my current iteration of Hebcal from Google Calendar, how do I then get the link for the tradition I want to follow? Thanks.

Thank you for your reply and the important information. I never learned that there is more than one way of determining halachic times. Since I use Hebcal's calendar link through Google Calendar, can you advise how I can change the havdalah time calculation for my account? I clicked on the Settings in the Hebcal icon but didn't see a way to change it. Is there a different Hebcal link I should use in Google Calendar? Thank you, Scott.

There are multiple traditions for Havdalah times. Hebcal gives you the option to specify whether you want tzeit hakochavim (sun 8.5 degrees below horizon, a default that works well in most locations on the planet) or a fixed number of minutes after sundown.

Some use 42 minutes after sunset for 3 small stars, 50 minutes for 3 medium stars, or 72 minutes for Rabbeinu Tam. You can choose any time you want.
