Hebcal widget for OS X is broken.

Michael -- did you change the format for the shabbat page?  I think this is the reason why people are complaining that the widget stopped working.  It may take a while for me to figure out what my widget was actually doing and fix it.  Also, I see you added a geo lookup.  I wanted to do that years ago but couldn't figure it out.

Hi all, we made a small change to our server configuration to permit API requests like this work without requiring HTTPS.

This should fix older versions of the widget.

Happy Chanukah!

Try the zip I posted about 4 messages uplist.  Or is it broke again?

It's been working fine for me since the fix.

I just want to say, that I have been using this widget for years and was sad a few weeks ago when it stop working, but kudos to everyone who helped make this work again. It's indispensable for me, and I wanted to let you know that there are people out there who sincerely appreciate it. Shana Tova

Perfect!  Thank you so much!

Well that was easy:)  Did show contents and changed HTTP to HTTPS. IT WORKS!!!!!!!!

Thanks to Mark for permission.  I left all the versioning and copyright as was.  It does work, but I have done NO testing.

NO Promises:)

But L'll do my best.

As the OP of the second round here, I just want to say I'm really grateful folks are working on this.  I realize Dashboard users are a dying breed but I use it ALL THE TIME and HebCal is one of my go-to widgets.  So, thanks!

Hi Talmadge,  I'll send it to you.  I did not use XCode to package it.  In fact, I don't remember how I made it into a bundle.   Email me saper@mac.com with your personal email address, and I'll send you the files that I have,.

Mark;

Send me the code please.  I'll look it over to see if I can do anything.  xCode, right?

It is unlikely that I'll be able to get it working again as I forgot how to create a new widget.  I have all of the code if anyone would like to work on it.

It looks like this is indeed broken again. Our change requiring HTTPS appears to be the cause of the breakage.

The widget is no longer available for download from the Apple website, perhaps due to Mark Saper not supporting it any longer.

Mark, if you're still out there, would you be willing to push out a change that uses https?

Michael,

Its been a long time since I looked at the Hebcal widget code.  I'll discuss this with my son and get back to you.

Mark

Is this tied to the macOS updates??

The HebCal dashboard widget is not working again (July 2018).  Will it be fixed?  Thank you.

We're pushing out a change that should fix the server-side to be compatible with the widget.

Hi Mark, good to hear from you. Yes, we made a change in our JS API to replace several document.write() calls with a single occurrence. It did appear to break the widget. Sorry about that!

Several years ago we introduced proper RSS and JSON APIs which let clients format the results howver they like. Perhaps the thing to do would be to use one of those?
